“Myths and Creeds are heroic struggles to comprehend the truth in the world.”   -Ansel Adams

And these struggles have a defined presence in the world of Event Planning. If you’re an Event Planner, you know what I’m talking about, because you face these stereotypical remarks every day. Some even go to the extent of asking, “Event planning? It’s a hobby, right? What’s your real job?” and it’s the existence of this mentality that led to the existence of this blog. Let’s start with the first one, the ‘is it a real job’ thingy.

Event Planning is a job for Everyone!

No. Nope. Nada. As clear as that. For starters, organizing birthday parties is not the only job we do. As a matter of fact, event planning requires a person to have the traits of an artist, an entrepreneur, and a manager at the same time. Event planners usually complete their event management degree, and step into the industry only after an extensive work experience. Some of them even go for further studies in the same, like the Certified Meeting Professional (CMP). So, if anyone ever asks you if it’s a “real job”, you’ll have a degree, a heavy resume, and a five-digit salary to answer that for you.

It’s so much fun! Not.

Possibly, the only fun thing about the job is the result, the end product, the event itself. Everything before that is one big ball of stress. Tight schedules, unimaginable deadlines, following up on hundreds of people, setting up meetings, and the worst of all, getting people to work – that sounds like everything but fun to me. And even after all that, you never know how much it’ll be appreciated because a thousand people will have a thousand ways of judging the event. Stating statistics, it’s been found that around 80% of event organizers dealt with stress issues at their jobs. On the flip side, though, 87% were content and happy with their jobs and 90% said they’d recommend it as a career option. Bad, eh?

You have Flexible Work Hours AND You’re Complaining?

Yes, because “flexible work hours” definitely eliminates the 9 to 5 routine, and brings along taking urgent calls during meals, responding to emails while on an outing, and sending texts while watching TV. Event planning takes you places, literally, and you get to meet a lot of new people and eat exotic food. But, you never get to sit back and relax because the work is not done till the event is. It was found out that many event planners work up to 17 hours a day, and some even go on to pulling all-nighters for four nights in a row to make the event a success. How well are you enjoying holding on to you 9 to 5 job, then?

Cha Ching and Ba Bling!

It’s widely believed that event planners are all about glamour and money. To a certain extent, that is true, but ‘all about’ is a definite myth. Now, since you know the number of hours and days we have to put together to earn those dollars, you’ll realize that the amount we make per hour is not something that qualifies as “well paid”. Event planning is an exciting job filled with thrilling experiences, which is why spectators only see the glitter on the stage. But, nobody realizes how many efforts it took at the backstage to make it happen.

Superficial, Carefree, Frivolous – that’s an Event Organizer

This one’s the last and the biggest myth about us. The very job of an event planner is to make the best out of whatever they get. It’s our specialty to pull off a grand event even with a stringent budget. Because we are well connected with professionals in every domain, it is easier for us to arrange for the best services under the budget constraint. The market being constantly on the rise, event planners have to struggle to keep their purses’ strings tight. You might want to reconsider those adjectives now, wouldn’t you?

Social media has made a great impact within the event organization industry to the point that if you are not utilizing it to promote your events, you are likely missing out on some important opportunities.  Every event organizer needs to be active on social media by promoting their events on platforms such as Facebook and Twitter.  Ultimately, greater visibility translates into greater returns, and social media is one easy (and fun) way to achieve it.

For those of you who are not yet taking advantage of social media, here are some simple tips for using social media to enhance awareness and attendance for your events:

  • Post your events to Facebook and Twitter so that customers can share with others that they will be attending.  This is a source of free promotion in the form of an endorsement from someone that people trust. In this way, your event reaches out to a larger audience and makes it more discoverable and enticing for others who did not know about it.
  • Promote your Twitter #hashtag. This encourages your attendees to be part of the event by asking questions and posting comments.
  • Just because the event is over doesn’t mean your job is done. This is a great time to use social media to get feedback and upload videos and photos to highlight the event in order to maintain a relationship with your attendees for future events.  You should also post images on popular image-based social platforms like Pinterest and Instagram.

Yapsody allows you to increase your social media presence by providing options to publish your events from Yapsody directly to Facebook and Twitter.  This keeps your fans and followers informed about all the latest upcoming events. Customers can also book tickets from Facebook by clicking on the ticket links, which will redirect them to your Yapsody Online Ticket Store.

At Yapsody, we continuously roll out new social media features as we do our part to help you “Own Your Ticket” through social media!

Be sure to visit us on FacebookTwitter, or our website for all of your event-planning needs.
